How the hospital estimate is built
For international self-pay patients, a useful quotation should follow specialist review and a defined treatment plan. The preliminary estimate reflects the expected diagnostics, procedure and hospital services, while the final invoice can differ if the actual treatment episode changes.
- Specialist review before a useful quotation
- Defined procedure or treatment strategy
- Written preliminary estimate
- Advance payment when required by the hospital
- Additional services if the clinical plan changes
- Final settlement after the care delivered is known
The diagnosis determines the operation
University retinal services use different surgical techniques for different problems, so a generic 'retina surgery' price can be misleading.
- Pars plana vitrectomy
- Membrane peeling for epiretinal membrane or selected macular disease
- Macular-hole surgery
- Scleral buckle / buckle surgery for selected retinal detachments
- Vitrectomy-based retinal-detachment repair
- Combined anterior- and posterior-segment surgery when needed
Tamponade and re-operation can change the treatment episode
Retinal surgery may use an intraocular gas or silicone-oil strategy depending on the diagnosis. Complex retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, previous surgery or recurrent detachment can require a different operation or another procedure later, which can materially change the final bill.
What to ask the estimate to include
Ask the eye center to define the assumed surgical and follow-up pathway before arranging international travel.
- Retinal examination, OCT and other pre-operative imaging
- Exact planned operation
- Local versus general anesthesia
- Gas, silicone oil or other procedure-specific materials when applicable
- Outpatient versus inpatient pathway
- Early postoperative retinal examinations
- Whether a second procedure or later silicone-oil removal is excluded
- Travel restrictions related to the planned postoperative state
Emergency retinal detachment is not a routine medical-travel purchase
LMU and UKE describe retinal detachment as a condition that may require prompt surgical repair. A patient with sudden flashes, a new shower of floaters, a curtain-like visual-field loss or sudden major visual deterioration should seek urgent local ophthalmic assessment rather than delay care while comparing international prices.
