International patients should first establish whether the symptoms, neurological findings and imaging support an operation rather than comparing procedure prices based on MRI wording alone.
Lumbar decompression and cervical reconstruction are different cost scenarios
Freiburg documents minimally invasive or microsurgical decompression for lumbar disc herniation and separate cervical pathways that can include decompression, disc prosthesis or fusion depending on anatomy. Ask the hospital to identify the spinal level, surgical approach and any planned implant in the written quotation.

Fusion or implants can change the budget substantially
A simple lumbar disc decompression may not require fusion. Cervical disease, instability, deformity or previous surgery can create a different operative plan with implants. The estimate should state why stabilization is proposed and whether implant costs are included.
Urgent neurological surgery is not the same pathway as elective medical travel
Severe bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle-area numbness or major progressive weakness can require urgent local assessment. Those situations should not be delayed while waiting for an elective international quotation.
Recovery, accommodation and return travel are part of the real budget
Ask about expected inpatient stay, wound checks, medication, physiotherapy, activity restrictions and when long-distance travel is medically reasonable. These practical costs are separate from the hospital bill but can materially affect the total cost of treatment abroad.

A useful estimate should correspond to the exact disc level and operation rather than a generic 'spine surgery' package.

- Are fusion or implants planned, and why?
- Which implants are included in the estimate?
- How many inpatient days are assumed?
- Is inpatient physiotherapy included?
- How are extra days or complications billed?
- What follow-up is included before return travel?
