Presurgical evaluation can be a major part of the episode
The hospital may need inpatient video-EEG monitoring, MRI, neuropsychological testing and selected PET/SPECT or functional mapping. If previous studies are incomplete or conflicting, the evaluation can be longer than the eventual operation itself.
Invasive EEG creates a separate diagnostic pathway
Some patients require stereo-EEG or other intracranial electrode monitoring before surgery. That adds another procedure, inpatient monitoring and interpretation before a definitive operation can be planned.
Different epilepsy operations have different resource profiles
Temporal or extratemporal resection, selective amygdalohippocampectomy, disconnection surgery, laser or stereotactic thermotherapy and neuromodulation are not interchangeable cost items. The quotation should name the expected procedure rather than say only 'epilepsy surgery'.
Post-operative monitoring and long-term medication remain relevant
Surgery does not automatically mean immediate withdrawal of anti-seizure medication. International patients should plan neurological follow-up, medication changes and seizure monitoring after returning home.
